a love letter to Blythe
On thursday, October 5th I wrote a love letter to Blythe Kirkland.
This is the one and only love letter I’ve ever written in my entire life. I’ve had tons of crushes, told a few I loved them (2 to be exact), but this was the only time I’ve written the undying declaration into script. It’s a different kind of love than that. It’s the kind of love that you think you can only have for your grandmother on your dad’s side. But then you meet that person and everything in life seems somehow easy again. And whenever you’re around that person you feel how you felt before you ever knew the sick kiss of grief. For me, that person is Blythe.
Blythe Kirkland is my sister. Well she isn’t. But we get mistaken for sisters a lot. We’re actually best friends. Anyways, this is a continuation of that original love letter:
Every time I see a hysteric glamour t-shirt I think of Blythe Kirkland. Blythe is the sound of laughter over white wine. She’s the taste of a sweet hot coffee with a cookie on the side. She’s an oat milk latte, I'm an almond milk latte. We’re both plain croissants.
It was love at first sight with us. I’ve never clicked with anyone that fast. It has been 265 days since we met. We have gone through absolute hell and back since then. We have experienced some seriously wild times and wild people together. I feel so lucky to be able to see how much she’s grown and changed over these 265 days. I’ve also grown and changed a lot since then. We’ve really grown and changed alongside each other. Finding best friends who you can evolve with is the best advice I can ever give and it’s really rare, so hang onto it when you find it.
I call her woman, she calls me woman. Half of our texts have the word woman in them. “Love u woman” is the sweetest message you can ever receive or send someone. Not everyone gets that.
She is the feeling of a sleepover with your best friend in 6th grade. My best friend in 6th grade was named drew fisher. hi drew fisher. this isn’t a love letter to drew fisher. this is a love letter to Blythe Kirkland.
Speaking of sleepovers, for some reason, I am unable to sleep at her apartment. We lay in bed together and she sleeps soundly while I sit there and let the time pass. I just always want to talk to her when I’m around her. I don’t want to waste any of our precious time together by sleeping.
She finds family wherever she goes because she’s loyal and cool like that. She’s the only person I hug. She’s the person I go to for brutal honesty, but somehow also the person I go to for the sweetest comfort on my worst days. She can be both of those things. I never have to tell her which one I need, she just has the intuition and wisdom to know what I need to hear at any given moment.
I love visiting her at work. I like watching her close up the shop at the end of the night. She’s incredibly hard working and organized and she just locks it down. She takes her work seriously and attention to detail is seriously impressive. She has a stronger work ethic and sense of drive than most of the people I know, especially people our age.
If you know me at all, you at least heard about Blythe because I bring her up with every chance I get and honestly we’re usually together. But, there are a few things you may not know about Blythe. One is that she’s a drummer. She goes to drum lessons every week and she is absolutely incredible at it. Sometimes she plays her drums for me when I go to her apartment or sends me videos of her practicing. I love to hear her play. Another thing you may not know about is her hilarious sense of humor. She gets it from her dad. There are a million amazing things about her that she only lets her closest friends see. I’m honored to be one of them.
Here are some of my fav photos of her and us together:
